I am the owner of The Family Connection Counseling Center and earned my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Like most people who enter this profession, counseling is a “calling” for me and had it not been for a few exceptional counselors who helped me to overcome difficult obstacles throughout my own life, I probably would not be where I am today. In terms of my approach to counseling, because I am a marriage and family therapist, I look at the individual, couple/family, as part of a system (or whole). I feel that the relationships that we have both inside and outside of our home have a significant impact on our life and therefore can be the source of great happiness and unfortunately, at times, stressful or painful due to dysfunctionality within the relationship. In my role as a therapist, I feel the client(s) is the expert in their life and therefore my job is to collaborate with them in navigating the challenges that bring them into therapy, and help them to uncover their own strengths and resources to facilitate the change they are seeking to improve their quality of life overall. I take an eclectic approach when counseling my clients as I feel there is no "one" theory and/or technique that fits all individuals and circumstances.
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate, supervised by Rick Bruhn, Ed.D., LMFT-S, LPC-S. Dr. Bruhn is a professor in the Counselor Education Department at SHSU and has over 40 years of experience in marriage and family therapy. He is also a current board member for the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists. Additionally, I am a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and have completed Level 1 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and will be using this method in my work with couples.
At SHSU, I was actively involved with Beta Kappa Tau (a local chapter of the counseling honor society, Chi Sigma Iota). Clinically, I have spent the past year counseling clients at Jack Staggs Clinic at SHSU (supervised practicum) as well as interning at Believe Therapies, LLC (a speech, physical, and occupational medical center) in Huntsville where I worked with a diverse group of individuals, families, adolescents, and children as a counselor and play therapist with a variety of different mental health issues including: ADD/ADHD (adults, adolescents, and children), relational/parenting issues, autism, trauma, and abuse.
Personally, I am married, the mom of three children, and have two dogs. My family and I moved to The Woodlands from Dayton, Ohio four years ago. My husband and I are actively involved in our church and community. In my leisure time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, reading, playing tennis, and being outdoors.
I am a member of the following professional associations:
- American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (Pre-Clinical Fellow)
- American Counseling Association
- Chi Sigma Iota - International Honor Society for Professional Counselors
- Texas Counseling Association
